  Black River Spillway & Rapids:
View Video

Latitude: 44.29683   Longitude: -90.84486
As the name suggests this spillway is from a dam in the Black River located in Black River Falls.  The city of Black River Falls, Wisconsin is on State Highway 54 just West of Interstate 94.  To get to the spillway from the intersection of Highway 54 and I-94 head West on Highway 54 1.03 miles and turn right (North) on Roosevelt Road and follow Roosevelt Road as it immediately turns left... follow Roosevelt Road 0.2 miles to just past the dam to a parking area on the right.  Walk over to the dam and you will find a path that goes down river below the dam where you can get a good view of the dam.  The path deteriorates as you traverse down the path and it gets quite rocky so be careful.  During high water the flow thru this area is quite impressive.  During low water water does not flow thru or over the floodgates but flows over a spillway of the very western end of the dam.  Sadly there are no good viewpoints of that spillway from the other side of the river.

Lake Arbutus Spillway:  View Video
Latitude: 44.41255   Longitude: -90.72521
From the town of Hatfield travel 0.47 miles south on County Road K where it crosses Hatfield Canal.  Park in the area just north of Road K to the entrance to the Hatfield Canal access road (do not block entrance to the canal road).  Walk 0.4 miles north along the canal to the spillway.  This is an area where you can do lots of exploring... there are lots of rapids in the Black River below the spillway.  During spring rains when all the spillways are open there is a very impressive flow of water over the spillways.

Latitude: 44.38956   Longitude: -90.75856
Just to the left of the picture shown is the power house with "humming" penstocks generating power.  Not much of a rapids and no spillway so this is "all there is" at this site. This is in the Black River upstream from Black River Falls.  From Black River Falls travel 3.3 miles north on Highway 27 to County Road E and turn right, travel another 4.28 miles to Power House Road and turn right, follow Power House Road 1.05 miles to a road that slants off to the right (small road sign says Public Recreation Area) that leads to the Power House and rapids.

Links & Helpful Hints...
Before you visit a waterfall it is helpful to know the surrounding landscape... we use two free internet services to help.  www.topoquest.com provides free topo maps which can be enlarged and printed.  Access Topoquest and then click "find maps" on their website, put in GPS from our data (without the minus sign), click "search", then click on the first USGS map that has a DRG name, click on the map itself and select zoom level.  To navigate the area... if you want to look at an area left of the map, click on the left edge of the map, etc.  Below each map will be a listing of features shown on the map... a little work and you will learn their system (sometime clicking on the edge will not take you to an adjacent map).
---------------
We also use Google Earth.  It is a free service you can download at https://www.google.com/earth/.  Like Topoquest, you put in GPS data (or city, or county and state) and it will "fly" you to the location requested.
---------------
There are lots of internet sites that list facts about Wisconsin... one of the best is the Wisconsin DNR site http://dnr.wi.gov/ which has all kinds of info.  Another good site is www.discoverwisconsin.com.
