Aurora Spillway:  View Video
Latitude: 45.80748   Longitude: -88.12553
A gigantic spillway which would be impressive if water ever flowed through all spillways (doubt that it ever does).  Best access to this one is from the Michigan side... go north on Route 95 to enter Michigan toward Iron Mountain; then after crossing into Michigan go 1.8 miles on Route 95 and turn left onto Woodward Avenue; then go 2.4 miles on Woodward and turn left onto Cowboy Lake Road... go 0.25 miles to the end of Cowboy Lake Road to a parking lot and walk to the south side of the parking lot to view the spillway.

Chipmunk Rapids:
Latitude: 45.89487   Longitude: -88.56922
Chipmunk Rapids is not accessible... the Pine River runs alongside Lost Lake Road but the property is posted as private and we do not trespass on private property.  The woods between the road and river are too thick to get a photo even when the river is only 50 foot from the road.  The river is also 30 feet or so below the road which also makes a photo difficult.  A nice looking rapid from what we could see, but we could not see through the trees for decent photos.  From Tipler on Route 70 go east for 2.62 miles and turn right onto Dream Lake Road which turns into US Forest Service Road 2156 and then turns into Lost Lake Road... 2.83 miles along those roads will get you to Chipmunk Rapids.

Pine River Rapids:  View Video
Latitude: 45.82989   Longitude: -88.28658
See above on how to get to LaSalle Falls... you will use the same trail to get to them rapids.  Two-thirds of a mile down the trail to LaSalle Falls you will find an unmarked trail off to the right (at the 2nd rest bench along the trail)... as soon as you start down this unmarked trail you will find a sign pointing left to the gorge and right to the canoe portage.  The left will lead you to the top of the 40 foot deep gorge but a very limited view of the rapids... take the trail to the portage where you can see a better view of the gorge, as well as the rapids as shown at left.  Worth the walk, it is a beautiful area.  Please be careful... these are dangerous cliffs!!!

Pine River Spillway:  View Video
Latitude: 45.82868   Longitude: -88.25459
Lots of flow through the spillway when we were there... there is also a power plant at this location but it is on a separate waterway so it does not detract from the spillway beauty.  The spillway is south of the town of Florence... from Florence go south on County Road N for 3.45 miles and turn right (west) onto County Road D; then go 1.25 miles on Road D and turn left onto Pine River Road; then travel 3.44 miles to a parking lot at the spillway.  If you like spillways, roller gates, and the roar of rushing water this is one to visit.

2017
Twin Falls Spillway:
Latitude: 45.87281   Longitude: -88.06977
Access from the Wisconsin side is prohibited by private road posting signs... Bass Lake Road (Route 4) runs by the spillway on the Michigan side but the area is fenced and no access to the spillway is available, so we could not get photos of the site.  This spillway is in the
Menominee River which separates Wisconsin and Michigan (the light blue line curving through the top left part of the picture at left is the state dividing line).  If you want to drive along Bass Lake Road take Route 2 northwest out of Iron Mountain to the intersection of Routes 2 & 95 and go north on Route 95 for 0.5 miles and turn left onto Twin Falls Access Road and in 0.5 miles it will intersect with Bass Lake Road.

Links & Helpful Hints...
Before you visit a waterfall it is helpful to know the surrounding landscape... we use two free internet services to help.  www.topoquest.com provides free topo maps which can be enlarged and printed.  Access Topoquest and then click "find maps" on their website, put in GPS from our data (without the minus sign), click "search", then click on the first USGS map that has a DRG name, click on the map itself and select zoom level.  To navigate the area... if you want to look at an area left of the map, click on the left edge of the map, etc.  Below each map will be a listing of features shown on the map... a little work and you will learn their system (sometime clicking on the edge will not take you to an adjacent map).
---------------
We also use Google Earth.  It is a free service you can download at https://www.google.com/earth/.  Like Topoquest, you put in GPS data (or city, or county and state) and it will "fly" you to the location requested.
---------------
There are lots of internet sites that list facts about Wisconsin... one of the best is the Wisconsin DNR site http://dnr.wi.gov/ which has all kinds of info.  Another good site is www.discoverwisconsin.com.
