Latitude: 44.25907   Longitude: -88.39029
From downtown Appleton go east on E. College Avenue for 0.9 miles to where it crosses the Fox River... park on the side-street (S. Alton Court) just before crossing the river and walk out on the bridge to take the picture shown at left.  There is a viewpoint area near the center of the bridge to take a picture.

Cedars Spillway:
Latitude: 44.27886   Longitude: -88.33261
The picture shown at left is a satellite image of Cedars Spillway on the Fox River in Appleton, as seen from Google Earth. The north side of the Cedars Spillway area is fenced and is not accessible... the south side is an industrial area and is accessible, but it is illegal to do so.  Newspaper reports are that people who have accessed the river by that direction have been fined for trespassing.  The south side is marked with "no trespassing" signs so there is no reason to risk the possibility of severe fines!

Central Park Spillway:  View Video
Latitude: 44.28111   Longitude: -88.27116
Picture shows only the south half of this massive spillway in the Fox River.  Some call this the Kaukauna Spillway which was built by the Army Corp of Engineers.  The spillway is just upriver from the Crooks Ave (Route 55) bridge going north out of the city of Kaukauna (Kaukauna is a suburb of Appleton)... Crooks Ave becomes Lawe Street as soon as you cross the river.  The spillway is adjacent to Central Park.

Elm Street Rapids:  View Video
Latitude: 44.27880   Longitude: -88.26287
This rapids is one of many throughout this stretch of the Fox River downstream from the Central Park Spillway... so if you visit, look around as you drive the area.  Going south on Crooks Ave in Kaukauna turn left 3 blocks south of the river on Dodge Street (3rd Street)... follow Dodge as it turns into Island Street and in 3 blocks turn right on Elm Street and in another 3 blocks cross the Elm Street bridge over one branch of the Fox River (the rapids is under the bridge).

Little Chute Spillway - Lower:  View Video
Latitude: 44.27416   Longitude: -88.30091
Access to this spillway is from Heesakker Park in Little Chute (a city just east of Appleton).  From downtown Little Chute go west on E. Main Street for 1.3 miles and turn right on Sanitorium Road and go to its end at a parking lot in Heesakker Park.  Walk the trail to the east, keep to the left up the hill and at top of the hill cross the bridge onto a paved path.  At the second rest bench along the paved path you will see a "minimal" gravel path off to the left... follow the path for about 300 yards to the viewpoint shown at left (total distance from the parking lot is 1/2 mile).  You can stay on the paved path for another view of the spillway but it is mostly secluded behind trees.

Links & Helpful Hints...
Before you visit a waterfall it is helpful to know the surrounding landscape... we use two free internet services to help.  www.topoquest.com provides free topo maps which can be enlarged and printed.  Access Topoquest and then click "find maps" on their website, put in GPS from our data (without the minus sign), click "search", then click on the first USGS map that has a DRG name, click on the map itself and select zoom level.  To navigate the area... if you want to look at an area left of the map, click on the left edge of the map, etc.  Below each map will be a listing of features shown on the map... a little work and you will learn their system (sometime clicking on the edge will not take you to an adjacent map).
We also use Google Earth.  It is a free service you can download at https://www.google.com/earth/.  Like Topoquest, you put in GPS data (or city, or county and state) and it will "fly" you to the location requested.
There are lots of internet sites that list facts about Wisconsin... one of the best is the Wisconsin DNR site http://dnr.wi.gov/ which has all kinds of info.  Another good site is www.discoverwisconsin.com.
