  Bagley Spillway  View Video
Latitude: 45.11469   Longitude: -88.76216
Another spillway and power plant on the Peshtigo River.  From downtown Marinette go 6.7 miles west on Route 64 and turn right (north) onto River Drive; then go 0.59 miles north and park on the east side of the road where there is a pull-off area... just south of the pull-off area is a closed gate for a road to the spillway... walking to the spillway is allowed and is only a 0.14 mile hike.

  Big South Falls:  View Video
Big South Falls is in Northeast Central Marinette County.  Our Wisconsin Waterfalls Travel Guide provides the GPS location.  Start your walk to these falls from the south end of Nbc Lane and go in a southeast direction avoiding the private property that is to the east.  The actual falls are due east of the end of Nbc Lane but you will need to walk southeast in order to avoid the private land.  There is no path and you will need to bushwhack (a strong hiking stick will help) your way through weeds, brambles and thorny bushes (lots of thorns).  Go southeast until you hear the river and then follow the river downstream.  As you approach the falls you will need to cross the stream to get a better view (but the rocks are very, very slippery and the stream is very swift... so be very, very careful)!!!  It is a difficult trip to get to these secluded and wild falls but the area and falls are beautiful, which makes it worth the trip!

  Chalk Hill Spillway:  View Video
Latitude: 45.51393   Longitude: -87.80238
This is a massive spillway, but as usual most of the water is flowing through the power plant, so massive water flow over the spillway is not present.  From the town of Amberg on Route 141 go south for 0.64 miles and turn left (east) onto County Road K; then travel 9.5 miles to the bridge over the Menominee River (across the bridge is Michigan).  The photo at left was taken from the river bridge.  If you cross the bridge and take an immediate left to a parking lot at the spillway you can see the spillway close up but the best picture is from the bridge.

2017
  Chipmunk Rapids:
Latitude: 45.53773   Longitude: -88.01889
Some people call this a falls but review on USGS maps and Google Earth does not show much of a drop... USGS calls is a rapids.  The area is surrounded by private property so we could not access the site to determine what it really looks like.  The rapids are in the North Branch of the Pike River about 2.75 mile northwest of Amberg.  As you can see from the aerial at left the rapids are west of Route 141 and south of Town Corner Lake Road.

Ingalls Power Plant Spillway:  View Video
Latitude: 45.35452   Longitude: -87.64947
As you can see most of the water is going through the power plant and only a small portion of the water is flowing over the spillway in the left of the picture shown.  This spillway can only be reached from the Michigan side of the Menominee River... from Stephenson, Michigan go south 2.6 miles and turn right onto Road 348 at Ingalls; then 1.8 miles to left onto Road 577; then follow Road for 1.9 miles to right onto P3 Road to the river just below the power plant.

Jerry Chute Rapids:
Latitude: 45.40415   Longitude: -88.31523
Jerry Chute Rapids is 0.35 miles downstream from Five Foot Falls... see the description above on how to find Five Foot Falls.  This rapids name is derived from the long 100 yard "chute" in the Peshtigo River as this rapids rambles down the river.
The land on each side of the river is private and access is enforced so we could not get video of the rapids.  The only way to see this rapids would be by kayak or rafting ride down the Peshtigo River.

7-10-17
Kingsford Spillway:  View Video
Latitude: 45.78715   Longitude: -88.04050
Not possible to get a close-up view of this spillway and power plant.  Since most of the water goes through the power plant it's not a very exciting picture (we are told that in early spring snow runoff there is significant flow down the spillways).  This view is from the Michigan side since there is no access from the Wisconsin side.  After entering Michigan on Route 95 toward Iron Mountain; in 1 mile after entering Michigan on Route 95 turn right onto E. Breitung Avenue (Route 6); then in 1.67 miles turn right onto Hydraulic Falls Road... in 0.8 miles there is a parking lot on the left from which you can walk to the Menominee River and see the picture shown at left.

Latitude: 45.10625   Longitude: -87.63750
This area of town is under construction during 2017 so it is difficult to get to an area where a good photo is available.  This photo was taken from Riverside Avenue on the south side of the Peshtigo River just 0.45 miles north of downtown Marinette where Route 41 crosses the Peshtigo River.

Niagara Spillway:  View Video
Latitude: 45.77342   Longitude: -87.98925
Entire area is fenced so the only view is from the front gate entrance to the Niagara Development Power Plant which is on Route 141 in the town of Niagara (just south of Iron Mountain, Michigan).  This is another power plant along the Menominee River.  Sorry about the poor quality of the video... I was zoomed to the limit and it was a windy day which caused considerable camera shake!  This is sometimes called Little Quinnesec Falls and sometimes Kimberly Clark Falls.

7-12-17
Peshtigo Spillway:  View Video
Latitude: 45.05360   Longitude: -87.74762
This spillway is in downtown Peshtigo just south of the Route 41 bridge over the Peshtigo River.  Very difficult to get a good view of the spillway because of buildings each side of the river... if you are venturesome and want to take a difficult path like we did you can get down to the rivers edge to take a decent photo.  Go across the Route 41 bridge heading east and turn right onto E. Front Street, then take the 3rd driveway entrance which is a parking lot for the canoe portage area, walk toward the river and to the closed walkway bridge over the river... just before the walkway bridge is a steep path down to the river (take it if you are brave).

8-16-17

Latitude: 45.40172   Longitude: -88.31423
Split Rapids is 0.35 miles downstream from Five Foot Falls... see the description above on how to find Five Foot Falls.  Its easy to see how it got its name... the
Peshtigo River splits around an island at this point and there are rapids on both sides of the island.  The land on each side of the river is private and access is enforced so we could not get video of the rapids.  The only way to see this rapids would be by kayak or rafting ride down the Peshtigo River.

7-12-17
Spring Rapids:  View Video
Latitude: 45.24160   Longitude: -88.11400
Spring Rapids on the Peshtigo River is a beautiful area but a bit difficult to get to (if the gate is not open you may have to walk one mile to get there).  From downtown Crivitz go west on County Road W for 5.76 miles and turn right onto Kirby Lake Lane; then 0.84 miles to an unnamed unpaved road... there is an entry gate at that point into state land which may or may not be open... it was open when we were there so we drove the extra mile to the rapids... the road is mostly one lane wide and full of water holes but did not give us any problems.

Sturgeon Spillway:  View Video
Latitude: 45.74139   Longitude: -87.86317
Not worth a visit... about all you can see is the effluent from the power plant... unless you have a boat and can take some close up photos of the spillway from downstream in the Menominee River.  If you look really close to the left of the power plant, through the trees, you can see the rushing water over the spillway but there is no way via land to get to the area to see the spillway (unless you have a boat).  We checked the other side of the river and everything is private property.  To get to this site take River Road south out of Vulcan, Michigan for 2.5 miles to right onto Power Dam Road; then 0.6 miles to the picture shown at left.  The gravel area is a put in point for boats if you really want to get out on the water and shoot a picture of the spillway.

When we were at the site we were fortunate to meet Scott who went by kayak to get the photograph shown at left (Thank You Scott!).

7-11-17
Taylor Rapids:  View Video
Latitude: 45.51953   Longitude: -88.34506
A nice rapids on the Peshtigo River.  This rapids is just upstream from Strong Falls described above.  From Strong Falls continue on the campground road another 1/4 mile to the campground area... best path we found was a path from campsite 15 down to the river (or another path just before you get to the campground) and then walk up river to see the rapids as shown in the photo at left.

Yellow Bridge Rapids:  View Video
Latitude: 45.47345   Longitude: -87.87513
From Amberg drive south on Route 141 for 2 miles to left onto Barker Road; then 5.4 miles to a bridge over the Pike River.  Land on both side of the river is private so you cannot get a good view of the nice rapids south of the bridge.  When this rapids was named the bridge railings were painted "yellow", thus the name... but now the railing are painted "rust" color!  The picture at left is the upper rapids... the video shows both the upper and lower rapids.

Links & Helpful Hints...
Before you visit a waterfall it is helpful to know the surrounding landscape... we use two free internet services to help.  www.topoquest.com provides free topo maps which can be enlarged and printed.  Access Topoquest and then click "find maps" on their website, put in GPS from our data (without the minus sign), click "search", then click on the first USGS map that has a DRG name, click on the map itself and select zoom level.  To navigate the area... if you want to look at an area left of the map, click on the left edge of the map, etc.  Below each map will be a listing of features shown on the map... a little work and you will learn their system (sometime clicking on the edge will not take you to an adjacent map).
---------------
We also use Google Earth.  It is a free service you can download at https://www.google.com/earth/.  Like Topoquest, you put in GPS data (or city, or county and state) and it will "fly" you to the location requested.
---------------
There are lots of internet sites that list facts about Wisconsin... one of the best is the Wisconsin DNR site http://dnr.wi.gov/ which has all kinds of info.  Another good site is www.discoverwisconsin.com.
