  Big Eau Pleine Spillway:  View Video

From downtown Mosinee go west 1.3 miles on Route 153 and turn south on Range Line Road; then in 1.2 miles turn right on Moon Road; then in 2 miles turn left on Dam Road and follow it 3.1 miles to the spillway (Dam Road will jog left in 1.8 miles).  The spillway from Big Eau Pleine Reservoir empties into the Bib Eau Pleine River and in 1.6 miles on downstream into the Wisconsin River.

  Big Rapids Spillway:  View Video

From Stratford go north 3 miles on Route 97 to Big Rapids Street and turn left; then in 1 mile turn left on Big Rapids Road... in 0.46 miles there is a parking lot at the end of Big Rapids Road in Big Rapids Park adjacent to the spillway in the Big Eau Pleine River.  There is another rapids just upstream but at low flow in August there is not much flow to create big rapids.

Brooks & Ross Spillway:  View Video
Latitude: 44.91683   Longitude: -89.61042
This spillway is just south of downtown Wausau.  Take Route 51 south from downtown 3.1 miles where it crosses the Eau Claire River... the spillway can be seen at you cross the bridge just upstream... cross the bridge and turn left on Drott Street to park.

Dells of the Eau Claire Falls is in Northeastern Marathon County.  Our Wisconsin Waterfalls Travel Guide provides detailed directions of where to find the falls along with GPS coordinates of the site.  When needed the travel guide also provides parking availability information, walking trail details and other information about the site.  A very beautiful place to visit.

Dells of the Eau Claire Spillway:  View Video
Latitude: 45.00487   Longitude: -89.33880
See above in the Dells Rapids description on how to get to this area (Hogarty is 17 miles east of Wausau).  The spillway is 300 yards upstream (east) of County Road Y... there are also significant rapids below the spillway as shown in the photo at left. 
A great place to visit with lots of good parking lots, picnic areas, good rest rooms, etc.   And there are no park fees.

March Rapids:  View Video

3.3 miles upstream in the Big Eau Pleine River from Big Rapids is March Rapids.  Again not significant rapids in August... maybe better in the spring.  From Stratford go 4 miles north on Route 97 to County Road P and turn left; then in 3.4 miles turn left on County Road E... in 0.5 miles the rapids and March Rapids Park will be on the right.

Mosinee Spillway:  View Video

From the center of downtown Mosinee go south on 4th Street (Route 153) and turn left on Fremont Street... Fremont Street ends at the river at a parking lot.  Walk upstream on a paved trail 0.2 miles... the paved trail takes a 90 degree turn to the left to cross a footbridge... at that point go right on an unmarked dirt trail into the woods... the Wisconsin River is about 100 feet from the paved trail.

Rothschild Spillway:  View Video

This spillway in the Wisconsin River is just south of Wausau... go east at the Rib Mountain exit of I-39 on Rib Mountain Drive; then in 0.3 miles turn right on Morning Glory Lane and in one block turn right on Lilac Avenue... follow Lilac Avenue for 2.1 miles as it turn into N. Lakeshore Drive and then Sunrise Drive... you will arrive at a parking area that will give you the scene shown at left.

Wausau Spillway:  View Video

This spillway is in downtown Wausau just south of Route 51/52.  From the intersections of S. 1st Ave along the east side of the Wisconsin River and Sherman Street (4 blocks south of Routes 51/52) go east and park in Riverside Park.  Walk north from the park along a paved trail and take a footbridge to an island in the river from which you can see the picture at left.

Before you visit a waterfall it is helpful to know the surrounding landscape... we use two free internet services to help.  www.topoquest.com provides free topo maps which can be enlarged and printed.  Access Topoquest and then click "find maps" on their website, put in GPS from our data (without the minus sign), click "search", then click on the first USGS map that has a DRG name, click on the map itself and select zoom level.  To navigate the area... if you want to look at an area left of the map, click on the left edge of the map, etc.  Below each map will be a listing of features shown on the map... a little work and you will learn their system (sometime clicking on the edge will not take you to an adjacent map).

We also use Google Earth.  It is a free service you can download at https://www.google.com/earth/.  Like Topoquest, you put in GPS data (or city, or county and state) and it will "fly" you to the location requested.

There are lots of internet sites that list facts about Wisconsin... one of the best is the Wisconsin DNR site http://dnr.wi.gov/ which has all kinds of info.  Another good site is www.discoverwisconsin.com.
