Links & Helpful Hints

Tips for viewing our website:
Different computer operating systems (Windows 7, Windows 10, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Apple, etc.) sometimes "see" our website differently.  For example... when you click on "view video" at one of the waterfall videos... it should play automatically to your screen... on some operating systems it will not play automatically, but will download the video to your computer (the downloaded video file will show at the bottom of your screen), and you then need to click on the downloaded video to play it... the video should play continuously (repeating itself automatically); on some systems it will not play continuously... to play it continuously, click on the "show more options menu" at the bottom of the video screen and select "repeat"; this will play the video continuously (some systems will save your selections and play future videos continuously... some systems will require you to select "repeat" mode each time).  We do not profess to be computer experts... you know your computer better than we do!

Before you visit a waterfall:
It is helpful to know the landscape surrounding the waterfall area... we use two free internet services (topoquest and Google Earth) to help.  www.topoquest.com provides free topo maps which can be enlarged and printed.  Access Topoquest and then click "find maps" on their website, put in GPS from our data (without the minus sign), click "search", then click on the first USGS map that has a DRG name, click on the map itself and select zoom level.  To navigate the area... if you want to look at an area left of the map, click on the left edge of the map, etc.  Below each map will be a listing of features shown on the map... a little work, and practice, and you will learn their system (sometime clicking on the edge will not take you to an adjacent map).  We also use Google Earth.  It is a free service you can download at https://www.google.com/earth/.  Like Topoquest, you put in GPS data (or city, or county and state) and it will "fly" you to the location requested; and provide an aerial view of the waterfall area.  This is really helpful in giving details and distance about how far you will need to walk to find the waterfall.

Other Wisconsin waterfall facts and maps:
There are lots of internet sites that list facts about Wisconsin... one of the best is the Wisconsin DNR site dnr.wi.gov --- type "waterfall" in their search box and it will lead you to all kinds of information about Wisconsin waterfalls.  Type "map" in their search box and you can find hundreds of maps that will help find your way around the state... as an example you can find a DNR topo map of every State Natural Area.

AND... if you want to see waterfalls, rapids and spillways really up close:
We highly recommend visiting https://www.milespaddled.com... they have lots of information about canoes and kayaks.  They even have an excellent "gear review" section if you are thinking about getting a kayak.  Their site has lots of videos that take you down a stream thru some exciting whitewater sections!  There is an interactive map on their site that show hundreds of "paddle sites" throughout Wisconsin.  The main feature of their site is a listing of "hundreds" of "Paddle Sites" throughout Wisconsin where you can choose sites to visit by their difficulty (one being easy and five being exciting... "five" might even be dangerous)!  The real beauty of viewing streams with a kayak is that you can get "up close and personal" with a rapids or falls and get some beautiful pictures... something you cannot do from shore (I've fallin' into too may streams trying to get a good picture)!  An additional plus is that lots of steams go thru private property... kayaking a stream thru private property is "usually" legal (if legality is in question check with DNR).
