  Forest Wander Lake Spillway:
Latitude: 46.14554  Longitude: -90.28871
This spillway is on private property so we do not have pictures of this site.  The aerial view of the spillway shown at left is from the Google Earth website.  This spillway is 16.5 miles northeast of Park Falls and would be reachable off Swamp Creek Road if the road leading to the spillway was not a private road.  USGS maps show water out of this spillway drops less than 10 feet so it is not a major spillway.  Forest Wander Lake is formed by the spillway dam across Swamp Creek and the Creek continues on downstream from the spillway as Swamp Creek.

  Gile Spillway:  View Video
Latitude: 46.42568  Longitude: -90.22674
This spillway is just that... a spillway from Gile Reservoir; the little building at the spillway is just that... a building!  I thought it was a power plant but it is not... a fellow waterways expert explained to me that this reservoir was created to hold water for when it is needed to provide water flow to the Xcel Energy hydroelectric downstream power plants at Saxon Falls and Superior Falls.  So... there is not much to see here (skip it if you have anything else to do).  In the town of Gile go south on Nimkon Street to where it ends at the Gile Reservoir.  The spillway is a short walk to the west.

Interstate Falls - Upper:  View Video
Latitude: 46.47465  Longitude: -90.19888
As you walk the path to Interstate Falls you will hear rushing water on your right, about half way to the falls.  We have named this spot Interstate Falls - Upper and the falls are shown on the left.  When we first visited the area we thought this was Interstate Falls but we later learned that was a mistake!  So when you hear the rushing water make your way toward the river to find these falls.  Read the description in Interstate Rapids description for more details on where this falls is located.

  Interstate Rapids:  View Video
Latitude: 46.47438  Longitude: -90.19840
As you wander around the Interstate Falls and Peterson Falls area there are numerous other interesting areas to visit.  It's difficult to explain exactly where each of these sites are so we suggest first walking the trail to Interstate Falls and then "working" your way upstream to Peterson Falls.  Problem is that there is no trail along the river so you need to "wander" and as best you can find your way along the stream to eventually get to Peterson Falls.  The area shown at left is upstream from Interstate Falls - Upper.  So, after leaving Interstate Falls, in 200 yards upstream you would next encounter Interstate Falls - Upper, then another 70 yards upstream to Interstate Rapids, and eventually another 650 yards further upstream to Peterson Falls.

Potato Falls - Lower is in Western Iron County.  Our Wisconsin Waterfalls Travel Guide provides detailed directions of where to find the falls along with GPS coordinates of the site.  When needed the travel guide also provides parking availability information, walking trail details and other information about the site.  One of the more beautiful falls in Wisconsin and one of the highest as it drops some 90 feet into the Potato River.  New information about this falls... in 2017 the county park people built a new observation stand to provide excellent views of the falls; so you no longer need to wade the stream to get good pictures.  The 197 steps down to the viewing stand is well worth the effort!

  Rouse Falls:  View Video
Getting to these falls is not for the "faint-of-heart"!  Rouse Falls is 3.4 miles West of Upson.  As you go north on
Casey Sag Road there is a sign pointing to Rouse Falls.  That road is difficult to traverse and becomes pure mud... you then walk westward thru the mud and deep bog to where the road ends and then wander down a deer path to the falls... it is worth the walk and you will find it a very unique and interesting area.  The falls drop 20 feet down a rock face in Rouse Creek unlike anything else in Wisconsin.  Rouse Creek drains into Erickson Creek and eventually into the Tyler Forks River.  There is something "strange" about this area... I have walked hundreds of miles through all kinds of woods and terrain all over Wisconsin; this area is the only area that I felt "uneasy" in what I can only describe as an "eerie" feeling!  Would be interested if anyone else had a similar feeling in that area.

  Saxon Rapids:  View Video
Latitude: 46.53811  Longitude: -90.37623
When at the spillway you will see a road going downriver... drive it to its end which ends in 125 yards (there is no turnaround, you will need to back out)... then walk out on the penstock and look upriver to see these rapids.
Or, for a better view walk on down the slope under the penstock and out on the rocks just below the rapids for the view shown at left.

  Saxon Spillway:  View Video
Latitude: 46.53931  Longitude: -90.37434
To see this spillway follow directions above to Saxon Falls but after reaching Saxon Road go 0.36 miles and turn right onto the spillway road... travel another 0.58 miles to a parking lot at the spillway.

9-2-15
  Shay's Dam:  View Video
Latitude: 46.23642  Longitude: -89.99458
This spillway has a drop of about 10 feet into the Turtle River (some internet sites say it is a 5 foot drop and some say a 15 foot drop... there is also conflict on its name... some say it is Shea Dam and some say it is New Fisher Lake Dam; some call in Shay's Dam and some call in Shay's Dam Falls).  There is also a small park picnic area at the dam.  From the intersection of U.S. Highway 51 and County Road J in downtown Mercer go 2.5 miles northeast on County Road J to the intersection of Beaver Lodge Circle.  Turn left (north) on Beaver Lodge Circle and travel 3.5 miles E. Fisher Lake Road which intersects to the right (make sure you stay on Beaver Lodge Circle, it wanders significantly in the 3.5 miles to E. Fisher Lake Road, after 1.06 miles it makes a 90 degree right turn, then in 0.47 miles it turns north again).  At E. Fisher Lake Road turn right and travel 1.25 miles to Shay's Dam on your left... there is a small parking area right next to the dam.  If I remember correctly there is also a sign identifying the site.

  Superior Spillway:  View Video
Latitude: 46.55986  Longitude: -90.41496
On upstream from Superior Falls-Upper discussed above you will find the spillway that controls the amount of water released to the stream below.
There would be significantly more water over the falls if there was not a Superior Falls Hydro Plant dam just upstream which Northern States Power operates.  The power company is required to maintain at least 20 cubic feet of water per second flowing over the falls.  The spillway is another 300 yards upstream from the Upper Falls.

We visited this area in November 2017 but did not make our way down the hill into the ravine to get pictures of the falls (the snow was a bit too deep for us to get down the hill).  We were able to see the falls from the top of the hill and it is a very beautiful falls... we estimate about a 5 foot drop and 15 feet or so wide.  It is on our to-do list for early 2018 when the snow is gone!

Links & Helpful Hints...
Before you visit a waterfall it is helpful to know the surrounding landscape... we use two free internet services to help.  www.topoquest.com provides free topo maps which can be enlarged and printed.  Access Topoquest and then click "find maps" on their website, put in GPS from our data (without the minus sign), click "search", then click on the first USGS map that has a DRG name, click on the map itself and select zoom level.  To navigate the area... if you want to look at an area left of the map, click on the left edge of the map, etc.  Below each map will be a listing of features shown on the map... a little work and you will learn their system (sometime clicking on the edge will not take you to an adjacent map).
---------------
We also use Google Earth.  It is a free service you can download at https://www.google.com/earth/.  Like Topoquest, you put in GPS data (or city, or county and state) and it will "fly" you to the location requested.
---------------
There are lots of internet sites that list facts about Wisconsin... one of the best is the Wisconsin DNR site http://dnr.wi.gov/ which has all kinds of info.  Another good site is www.discoverwisconsin.com.
